Let’s Talk About The Power Of Self Talk.

Really?! Talking nice about myself will help to build my self worth? Is a query I hear from my clients. Disclaimer, things do not always work. Truth, they work if you want them to. So, yes, talking nice about yourself will start to build your self worth, confidence, awareness and create a narrative of yourself that is yours and genuine. Think about this, we have all been taking in information from our surroundings since the day we were born. Whether it comes from the people who raised us, our community, school, spirituality, etc., this information can shape us and influence our beliefs. It can influence how we see ourselves, and the labels we assign to ourselves. “I’m a hard worker”, “I’m lazy”, “I do well under pressure, “I’m weak”…

How you talk about yourself internally or externally, ultimately influences how you and others will see you. So why not start with some positive self talk. This is not always an easy thing to do.  I recommend starting with what you like about yourself, what about you serves you as a person, as a friend, as a colleague etc. If you find this difficult, you can ask yourself what someone close to you, that you care about, would say about you. Then pay attention to how you talk to yourself when under pressure or when you are feeling stressed compared to when you are feeling happy.

Exercise: Try starting with saying 1 thing a day you like about yourself and why, and try not to repeat the same thing each day.
