Saying Hello Matters—Even When You Can’t Stop to Chat

Last night, I came home completely exhausted. It had been a long day, and all I wanted was to get inside and tuck myself away. I rushed into the house without even checking if any neighbours were outside.

Just a few days earlier, though, I had stepped outside and was genuinely excited to see my neighbour. We ended up chatting about our kids and how much fun they’ll have once the weather gets nicer.

I’m someone who enjoys small talk, but it really depends on the moment. If I’m deep in thought or trying to squeeze in a quick walk after dropping my kids off at school before starting work, I tend to avoid eye contact with anyone approaching—until the last second, when I offer a quick “hello” or “have a nice day.”

But when I have time, when there’s nowhere I need to rush off to, I’m a completely different person. I’ll stop and chat with almost anyone—commenting on beautiful flower beds, asking how they keep rabbits out of their gardens, or simply enjoying a friendly conversation.

Because of this, I sometimes feel like I come across as hot or cold to my neighbours when it comes to simple gestures of acknowledgment. In reality, they may not even notice the difference. Still, it’s worth remembering that something as small as a smile, nod, wave, or quick hello can make a positive difference in someone’s day—your own included.

Some days we have the energy to stop and chat. Other days, we’re wrapped up in our own thoughts. Neither is wrong. But we are part of a community, and acknowledging the person walking toward you takes very little effort. A simple smile, wink, or nod can remind us all that we belong to something bigger.
